What is AI and how is it being used by scammers?

What is AI?

AI stands for Artificial Intelligence. AI simulates human thoughts, speech, text and vision in some cases. AI uses algorithms – which is a list of instructions - to solve problems of perform tasks.

AI is being used by cyber scammers in a variety of ways, which makes it difficult for individuals and organisations to detect and prevent cyber crime. Below are some ways AI is being used to hack and scam.

How is AI used to scam or hack?

Social Engineering: AI-powered chatbots are being used to impersonate real people and deceive users into giving away sensitive information. These chatbots can be programmed to mimic human behaviour and responses, making them difficult to detect. They can be used to initiate conversations with unsuspecting users, ask for personal information, and even initiate malware downloads.

Malware: AI is being used to create sophisticated malware that can evade detection by traditional security software. These malware programs can be used to steal sensitive data or gain unauthorised access to systems. AI-powered malware can learn from its environment and evolve to bypass security measures that have been put in place.

Password Cracking: AI is being used to crack passwords at a much faster rate than traditional methods. AI algorithms can analyse data patterns and make predictions about passwords that are most likely to be used, such as common phrases or character combinations. This makes it easier for cybercriminals to gain access to sensitive information.

Spear-Phishing: AI is being used to create highly personalised spear-phishing emails that are difficult to detect. AI algorithms can analyse publicly available information, such as social media profiles, to create emails that appear to be from a trusted source. These emails can then be used to trick individuals into divulging sensitive information or clicking on malicious links.

Identity Theft: AI is being used to steal identities by creating realistic fake profiles. AI algorithms can analyse publicly available information to create profiles that appear to be real, including social media accounts and online purchasing histories. These profiles can then be used to apply for loans or credit cards in the victim's name, leading to financial loss and damage to their credit score.

What can businesses do to protect themselves?

As the use of AI continues to grow, it is important for individuals and organisations to take steps to protect themselves from cyber crime. This includes using strong passwords, enabling two-factor authentication, and regularly updating security software. Additionally, it is important to be cautious when interacting with unknown individuals or organisations online and to report any suspicious activity to the appropriate authorities.

Although we are thrilled that programming is advancing the way it is, we also need to be fully aware that all technology has the ability to be used in criminal ways.
