Why the Start of the Year Is a Good Time to Review Your Passwords

A new year is often a time for fresh starts. For businesses, it is also a good opportunity to review something that plays a critical role in everyday security but is often overlooked - passwords.

Weak, reused or outdated passwords remain one of the most common ways cybercriminal gain access to business systems. With scams and phishing attempts continuing to rise, taking time to review your password practices can significantly reduce your risk.

Why password security still matters

Many data breaches begin with a single compromised password. This might come from a phishing email, a leaked database from another service, or simply a password that is too easy to guess. Once attackers gain access, they can move quickly through email, file storage and financial systems.

If your passwords have not been updated in some time, or if the same password is used across multiple accounts, your business could be exposed without you realising it.

When should passwords be changed?

It is a good idea to review and update passwords at the start of the year, especially if:

  • Passwords have not been changed in the last 12 months

  • The same password is used for multiple systems

  • A staff member has left the business

  • You have noticed suspicious emails or login alerts

Regular reviews help ensure that access remains appropriate and secure.

What makes a strong password today

Modern password security is not just about length. Strong passwords should be:

  • Unique for every system

  • Difficult to guess and not based on personal information

  • Stored securely using a reputable password manager

Where possible, multi-factor authentication should also be enabled. This adds an extra layer of protection by requiring a second form of verification, such as a code or app approval.

As we have discussed in previous blogs, cybersecurity threats continue to evolve. Passwords alone are no longer enough, which is why businesses are increasingly adopting stronger security measures and better access controls.

At Loyal I.T. Solutions, we help Central Coast businesses review their security practices and put practical protections in place. Starting the year with stronger passwords is a simple step that can make a real difference.
